Donald Dean Spragg

Donald Dean Spragg, 74, of Rock Island, Illinois died June 21, 2024, at St Anthony Nursing Home in Rock Island, Illinois.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 9 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. Inurnment will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Fontana Cemetery, Rural Hazleton.

Donald was born April 28, 1950, to Donald E. Spragg and Darlyn (Ohl) Spragg, who later divorced and was raised by his grandparents Floyd and Ester Spragg until his father married Dorthy (Pierce) Spragg. Darlyn went on to marry Robert Streit.

One memory he shared was how he fought a car and won. He was walking across the street to get a loaf of bread and was hit by the car. He was the middle child with 2 brothers, 1 sister and 1 half-sister. Donald graduated from Oelwein High School in 1969 and later Area 1 (now called Northeast Iowa Community College).

On Aug. 8, 1971, he married Mary Marguerite Larson at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. They had three children and lived in Farmersburg. He worked for numerous places until 1977 when he became employed by Clayton County Secondary Roads and retired in 2012 after 35 years.

Donald is survived by his children, Marguerite (Brian) Cooley, Jenifer Gonterman, Robert (fiancé Waynalei Tizon) Spragg, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 on the way. Brothers Marvin Spragg, Jeff (Debra) Spragg, sister Joyce (Jim) Christenson, and half-sister Evanna Streit, sister-in-law Sandy (Tom) Kisner, brothers in law, Terry Larson and Larry (Red) Larson and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepparents, his wife Mary in 2009, parents-in-law, in-laws: Vivian Miller, Wayne Larson, Charlet Miller, Bonnie Hassler, Harry Larson, Junior Larson and James Larson.
