Carol Yvonne Marting

Carol Yvonne (Heins) Marting, 88, passed away unexpectedly at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City on January 17, 2026.
Carol graduated from Monona High School in 1955, and the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1959, with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. Music was always a part of her life, playing the piano as an accompanist for students throughout her high school years as well as first chair coronet in high school and college. There was always music playing within her and Elmer’s household. She utilized her college education throughout her life, sewing her children’s clothing, making gourmet meals out of only a few ingredients, canning the summer garden vegetables for the entire year, and creating a home filled with her artistic skills throughout her lifetime. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, married and a founding member of the bell choir. She enjoyed sharing her art of counted cross stitch, knitting, sewing, quilting, stain glass design, tole painting and in her later years, genealogy and local history. Through her time and efforts spent researching for the Monona Historical Society, Carol has helped many people with their family history searches, as well as compiling the centennial history of Monona and the history of the Monona school. She has helped locate historical pictures and stories that are part of the Monona souvenir pottery items such as the Germanfest cookie jar and pie plate. Carol started getting interested in genealogy and historical records because her family was very close knit and they also kept a lot of items that have helped her in her research.
Carol will be remembered for her delicious zucchini bread and mint bars (funeral bars). Carol provided service to the community as an EMT and treasurer of the Monona Museum for decades. Carol enjoyed the ‘birthday club ladies’, stop in visits in her later years, and her lifelong college friends, who would get together annually for over 60+ years.
Carol is survived by her children, Lori Huelskamp of Overland Park Kansas, Lynn (Jim) Olson of Gunder Iowa, Leanne (Jeff) O’Brien of Cedar Rapids Iowa, and Larry (Amie Bissonett) Marting of Elko Minnesota; grandchildren, Lexie (Bob) Brockman, Daniel Huelskamp, Eryn (Johnny) Lemke, Emily (Conor) Salvino; great grandchildren, Gabrielle (Jeremy) Lawson, Gage Brockman, Aidan Lemke, and Caroline Lemke; siblings, Fred (Bonnie) Heins of Monona and Lorna Sterrett of Seneca, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lorene Heins and husband, Elmer in 2025.
Memorials may be made in Carol’s name to Monona Historical Society, MFL Ambulance or St. Paul Lutheran Church. Visitation and services are at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 401 South Egbert Street, Monona, Iowa 52159, Saturday, April 18, 2026. Visitation is from 12:00 – 1:00 with service and gathering starting at 1:00 p.m.
