Elizabeth “Betty” Mary Brownson

Elizabeth (Betty) Mary Henry Brownson died peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Elkader Care Center. She was 96. Betty was born at home to Albert and Rose (Balzell) Henry on April 11, 1929, near West McGregor. She was baptized May 26, 1929, received First Communion, and celebrated Confirmation, all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor.
Betty walked about a mile to school, completing kindergarten – 12th grade in McGregor. Upon graduation, she worked with her father on the farm until the summer of 1945, when she began working at the button factory in McGregor, and waitressing at the Hotel on the Heights. Over the next several years she enjoyed secretarial work at Headford Brothers Foundry in Waterloo, IA, as well as with Crawford County Farm Bureau, in Prairie du Chien, WI.
In 1950, she was asked to return to the family farm to help care for her grandfather; Betty also worked as a nursing aide at the McGregor Hospital. These roles led her to meet Palmer Brownson, who would soon become her husband. The couple married on November 21, 1953.
Palmer and Betty honeymooned in California, and returned to the Brownson farm, where she enjoyed working alongside her husband, and hosting large family gatherings in their home. In 1983, they moved to Monona, where Betty remained until entering the care center in May 2025. Before Palmer’s death October 8, 2002, the couple enjoyed traveling and socializing with friends. Betty continued to travel, and especially enjoyed bus trips with friends. She loved to volunteer at the Postville Food Pantry, Garden View, and the Monona blood drive.
Many will remember Betty for her beautifully crocheted afghans, baby blankets, and crafts, which she often gifted to family and friends. She was devoted to her faith, her church, her husband, and her friends.
Betty often expressed gratitude for the many people whose assistance helped her remain in her home in her later years.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, and is survived by several nieces and cousins, along with numerous friends.
