Youth movement yields signs of future softball success

MONONA — A young MFL/MarMac softball team took a step in the right direction this year, winning 11 games despite sporting a roster short on numbers and upper classmen.

The Bulldogs finished 11-19 on the season, a record nearly identical to 12-20 records compiled by teams the last two years while fielding a roster of just 13 players, only one of whom was either a junior or a senior.

MFL/MacMac early season was marked by winning and losing streaks. The Bulldogs opened the season with three straight losses, including a pair to a Kee High team that earned the top seed in this week’s state softball tournament. They broke through with a pair of victories over Starmont and moved briefly over the .500 mark with victories over Waukon and West Central.
