School Board approves Title I reading application

MONONA — The MFL MarMac School Board approved an application for Title I reading funding during a brief school board meeting last Monday.
Elementary Principal Kathy Koether explained that the School District’s budget for Title I reading is $122,957, which is down about $4,000 from past years. She said the funds will pay for 1 ½ teachers’ salaries and also for the substitute teachers that the district hires from time to time to help cover testing and other things done in the Title I program. Money is also used for instructional supplies.
“The application was very similar to past years,” she said.
Koether said she used free- and reduced-lunch data from last May on the application, as 2017-18 data is not yet available. She said she prefers to use numbers from September on the application, as they are sometimes higher than at other times during the year.
Title I reading will be predominantly taught in kindergarten through third-grade.

“We will hit reading very hard,” she said. “We can get everybody on grade level I think.”
