Regan brings message of encouragement to MFL MarMac

MONONA — Trevor Regan never saw himself as a motivational speaker. He left his home in Lander, Wyo. hoping to walk onto the Duke University basketball team and, after graduating from college went to work as a business developer for a clean energy company in Australia. It was there that he began developing the “Train Ugly” program that he brought to the MFL MarMac schools and community last Wednesday.

“I didn’t plan on being a speaker,” he said of his now full-time career. “It’s just something that I fell into, but I do love it.
Regan said the seeds for his program started much earlier, however. His dream was to play basketball at Duke, and he said he eschewed other opportunities to attempt to walk on there. He nearly made the team, only to be the final player cut.

“I was kind of crushed, but it planted a seed of ‘What could I have done differently,’” he said. “That curiosity and that seed are what led to this … that searching the research about how people learn and how that works, all kind of wondering what could I have done better. Now I have discovered some powerful stuff and I’m excited about teaching people.”

Regan said his program began as a blog where he was sharing what he was learning.
“The blog took off and it’s led to this big movement now,” he said.

Regan’s motivational speaking career began two and one-half years ago and has taken him all over the world.

While working in Australia he said he learned how to interact with scientists and then explain the research to everyday people.
