Public hearing draws calls to stop Walz Energy facility

ELKADER — Public sentiment was overwhelmingly against the Iowa Department of Natural Resources issuance of a storm water discharge permit for the Walz Energy facility east of Monona during a public hearing on the issue last Wednesday at the Clayton County Office Building in Elkader.
 
More than 30 of the 44 individuals who spoke at the two-hour hearing came out against the permit, which would allow construction of the proposed 10,000-head cattle operation and methane digester to continue.
 
 
“I see this project as a rare opportunity for the DNR and northeast Iowa in general,” McGregor’s Allison Bell said. “It’s not every day that a proposed project carries so much risk for so many with so little benefit for so few.”
