NWS indicates another round of spring flooding likely for Mississippi River towns

MCGREGOR — For the second straight spring, severe flooding appears likely for Upper Mississippi River towns, including Marquette and McGregor, this spring.

That was information listed in the first spring flood outlook released last week by the National Weather Service office in La Crosse.

According to the report, “the overall risk for spring flooding along the main stem of the Mississippi is well above normal this year. Risk for flooding along the tributaries ranges from near normal to well above normal.”

The report cites persistent wet conditions across much of the region as well as above normal soil moisture and much above normal stream flow conditions. It notes that while snow cover is near normal in the southern portion of the NWS La Crosse region, including northeast Iowa, there is much deeper snow in northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.
