Monona Council approves garbage contractor

MONONA — Major changes are coming to refuse collection for Monona residents.

Last Monday City Council approved changes that will take the City out of the garbage collection business as of July 1. Council approved a proposal from Town and Country Sanitation of Boscobel, Wis. to collect the city’s residential and commercial garbage and transport it to the Winneshiek County Landfill. In addition, the Council passed the first reading of an ordinance that would raise waste collection rates for residential customers.

Town and Country’s bid was selected over others from Waste Management and Kluesner Sanitation and includes both residential and commercial pickup. Council members debated for nearly 45 minutes about the change, spending much of the time talking about its financial impact.
