Missouri natives find their place in Monona historical tree

MONONA — A Kansas City-area family found surprising ties to the Monona area during a visit to the Monona Historical Museum last week.

Stan Zemula and his family visited the museum Tuesday to explore ties to the area, which included his wife Lori and her sister Roxane Bock’s ancestral tie to the city’s founder, Phineas Page Olmstead.

“We wanted to learn more about the Olmstead family and what they did in the community, see pictures and to tour the house,” Zemula said. “Lori and Roxie got to stay in the house when they were young girls. We just wanted our grandkids, or some of them, to see it, and I took a lot of pictures that this will become part of our family history now.”

Zemula said it was his wife and her sister’s idea to return to Monona, though trips of this sort are a regular thing for his family and have included stops throughout Nebraska, Kansas and other parts of Iowa.
