MFL MarMac takes flight with Speech All-State nomination

MONONA — MFL MarMac built on its long tradition of speech contest success last week, with several groups earning high marks at Large Group Speech Contest in Decorah, including its TV News Group, which was nominated for All-State.

Coltin Ball, Reagan Butikofer, Chelbe Feuerhelm, Lizzie Herzmann, Keagan Smerud and Sierra Wiebensohn teamed up to perform “YFLY Airlines,” a news broadcast from the cockpit of an airliner to the passengers in the cabin as they flew across the country. The pre-recorded performance received straight Division I ratings at state contest Feb. 3 and learned it had been nominated for All-State last Monday.

Herzmann said she had a good feeling the performance had gone over well with the judges long before seeing their scores or learning they had been nominate for All-State.

“Generally at State the judges don’t say anything while you are performing or after – they don’t give you any oral comments – but they were laughing and making comments throughout the video and then at the end they all said it was …,” she said.

“I had a good feeling,” Wiebensohn added.
