MFL MarMac improve group earns All-State nomination

MONONA — MFL MarMac student Max Koeller, Nick Stavroplus and Jaxton Schroeder earned a spot among the elite high school speech students in Iowa recently, gaining the chance to perform at this weekend’s All-State Speech Festival in Ames.

The festival is the top honor speech students can earn. The local trio earned their spot with a group improvisation performance at the State Competition in Dubuque.

For group improvisation, a team draws three random topics and has just two minutes to decide which topic they want to make a performance out of and to prepare a five-minute skit. Schroeder said this was his first time performing the category while Koeller and Stavroplus had performed it multiple time before, though they had never earned an All-State nomination.

“They were leading the group and I just tried to help out,” Schroeder said. “A lot of it has to do with the dynamic between the individuals in it. Me, Max and Nick are great friends. We have a dynamic that works good with improv.”
