MFL MarMac chemistry students place third at competition

MONONA — A group of MFL MarMac chemistry students placed third earlier this month in its first-ever foray into chemistry competition at Loras College in Dubuque.

High School Chemistry Teacher Cheryl Drowns said her students had participated in the competition when she taught at Beckman High School and that she was very pleased with way her MFL MarMac students responded.

“Generally the first year they don’t do that well,” she said. “But they worked hard.”

Drowns said she had fun with the competition at Beckman and felt it would work at her new school.

“It challenges them on some of the most important chemical concepts, tests their lab skills and it also just gets them around other kids that are into science,” she said.
