MFL MarMac announces entry door changes

MONONA — The MFL MarMac Community School District announced changes last week to enhance student and staff safety and security.

Effective Thursday (Jan. 17) all doors in all of the District’s buildings will be locked between 8:20 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. They will not open in the morning until 7:45 a.m.

High School Principal Larry Meyer said the change comes not as a reaction to any specific problem, but in a sense of being proactive about safety.

“We’ve had this safety committee now for going on two years and the less time the doors are open, the better,” he said. “It’s not going to be that difficult once everybody is aware and understands why the doors are being locked and are only open from 7:45 to 8:20.”

Meyer said doors had previously been locked during the school day, but were often unlocked earlier as parents dropped their children off or coaches opened the buildings so that students could get in for early practices or weight-lifting sessions. He added that the McGregor Center has been following this policy for a period of time.
