McGeough leads Bulldogs at State Wrestling Tournament

DES MOINES — MFL MarMac sophomore Gabe McGeough became the school’s youngest state wrestling place winner since the 2016-17 season last week, taking fifth place at the meet held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

McGeough was one of four Bulldogs wrestling on the state’s biggest stage, joining senior Zach Howe, junior Jacob Trudo and freshman Karter Decker.

“We had some young kids down there and got some good experience,” Wrestling Coach Chet Bachman said. “You always hope for a little bit more, but it doesn’t always work out that way and you just have to make the most out of it and take something positive out of the weekend.”

McGeough overcame a first-round loss to be MFL MarMac’s fifth state place winner in the past three years, joining Michael Egan (twice), Nathan Johanningmeier and Garret Keehner. The last sophomore to place at State for the Bulldogs was Korby Keehner in 2017.

McGeough led early in his 138-pound first-round match against Wapello’s Daniel Meeker before giving up an escape and a takedown to trail 3-2 after one period. Meeker led 6-2 after two periods and won 8-2.
