Local fire departments battle cold, extinguish house fire

MONONA — Several local fire departments battled extreme cold to extinguish a house fire Thursday in rural Monona.
The Monona Volunteer Fire Department received the call to 13768 Golden Avenue at approximately 9:55 a.m. By the time fire fighters arrived the home was completely engulfed. 
Approximately 50 firefighters from Monona, Luana, Farmersburg, St. Olaf and McGregor controlled the blaze and trucked water to the site in temperatures near zero and wind chills reported at approximately 10 degrees below zero. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately two hours. No injuries were reported and the home, which was unoccupied at the time of the fire and being remodeled, was a complete loss.
The MFL Ambulance Service, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation, Allamakee Clayton REC, MB Construction and Clayton County Secondary Roads also assisted at the scene.
 
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
