Local business pays tribute to long-time employee

MONONA — Justin and Mark Birdnow like to refer to their Birdnow Chevrolet dealership as a family. Last week their family paid tribute to one of its own.

Thursday the Birdnows unveiled a bench dedicated to Bob Melcher, who passed away earlier this year, for his 57 years of service to Birdnow Chevrolet and its predecessor, Huinker Chevrolet. On hand for the unveiling were Melcher’s widow, Joyce, as well as his daughter, Carla Pester, and his grandsons, Cayden and Carsten Pester.

“It’s special,” Joyce said through tears of the dedication to her husband of nearly 54 years. “The dealership was his life … our life and our kids’ life. We’re just grateful for everything. It did well for us.
