Group asks EPA to monitor Walz Energy project

MONONA — Forty individuals have signed a letter asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to more closely monitor the potential impacts of the Walz Energy facility being built along Highway 18/52 east of Monona.
Those signing the letter include a pair of adjacent property owners as well as a State Senator David Johnson from Ocheyedan and State Representative Charles Isenhart from Dubuque. Spook Cave and Campground owners Paul and Paula Rasmussen have signed the letter as have leaders of the Clayton County Conservation Awareness Network, Iowa Environmental Council, Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club, Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center and the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association.

The letter, initiated by the Clayton County Conservation Awareness Network (CCAN), questioned the ability of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to oversee construction of the facility and asks if the DNR’s actions violate the Clean Water Act.
