Funds no longer available for storm sirens

MONONA — The City of Monona has received bad news about its hope for funding from Homeland Security for new outdoor warning sirens and it can thank Hurricanes Harvey and Irma for it.
 
City Manager Dan Canton reported at last Monday’s city council meeting that all of Iowa’s Homeland Security funds are currently on hold due to the disasters that devastated southern Texas and much of Florida over the past month. Though the potential funding is at least temporarily frozen, however, Canton said the grant application process should continue.
 
“We still want to get something submitted,” he said. 
 
On a more positive note, however, Canton reported that the City may be able to replace the three existing sirens with two larger versions, potentially saving about $12,000 in the process. One of the two sirens would be located would be located at the City’s water department and the other on South Page Street.
