Egan earns third straight state wrestling bid

DECORAH -- MFL MarMac senior Michael Egan earned his third consecutive state wrestling berth
Saturday, though this year he will not have any teammates in Des Moines with him.
Egan placed second at 138 pounds, providing MFL MarMac’s lone highlight in one of the state’s toughest
Class 1A districts. Second-ranked Denver dominated the district, taking the team title by 57 points and
qualifying wrestlers for the state tournament in nine of the 14 weight classes. Wapsie Valley was second
and qualified four kids for state while South Winneshiek was third but qualified just two for the state meet.
MFL MarMac placed sixth in the team standings.
Egan was the lone Bulldog to win his first-round match, scoring a 6-3 decision over Rockford’s Trevor
Johnson. Though Egan dropped the final to Denver’s Riley Wright, he did not have to wrestle again
because Johnson won the third-place match. The Bulldog junior will have a tough first-round matchup at
the state tournament against fifth-ranked Austin Gutknecht of Clarinda.
