District Wrestling - Howe leads Bulldog quartet to State

ARLINGTON — MFL MarMac senior Zach Howe had never screamed so loudly. Moments after pinning South Winneshiek’s Damon Meyer in his first ever district appearance to earn a coveted trip to the State Wrestling Tournament, it was all he could do as he found his way to his feet.

“This feels amazing,” Howe said after the match. “It’s something I haven’t felt before. It feels good.

“This has been my whole goal through high school to get through districts and get to state,” he said.

“I put a lot more work in the offseason (this year),” he said. “I put a lot more work in the weight room, just got stronger and worked more on my technique.”

Howe was one of four Bulldog state qualifiers from a district that featured the No. 2 ranked team in the state. Junior Jacob Trudo made the tournament at 285 pounds, sophomore Gabe McGeough qualified at 145 and freshman Karter Decker qualified at 126. Howe was a district champion while Trudo, McGeough and Decker lost to ranked wrestlers in their district final and made the tournament as district runners-up.

“You couldn’t have asked for a much better day,” Bulldog coach Chet Bachman said. “If you would have looked at all this on paper I think this is the way it looked like.
