Decorah carver teaches Monona group new techniques

MONONA — The Monona Wood Carvers group had a special treat at their Christmas potluck dinner – a visit from one of northeast Iowa’s most well known carvers.
 
Decorah’s Harley Refsal is an internationally known figure carver and author of three books on carving, including “Whittling Little Folk.” He shared advice and showed off samples of his work at the Monona Historical Museum last Tuesday.
 
Refsal talked about how he became a carver and about flat plane carving, which he does using a single knife.
“Where we have to go out and buy all these tools, and we only use one at a time,” event organizer Elmer Marting said.
 
Refsal said he grew up in a society where people tended to fix or make things themselves, whether that was things like his grandmother making clothes and quilts or guys tending to carry their pocket knives.
