Debate team gives students a chance to explore hot-button issues

MONONA — Should police officers use probable cause or reasonable suspicion to search students at school? Is deployment of anti-missile systems in South Korea’s best interest? Should the United States require universal background checks for all gun sales and transfer of ownership? Should reparations be given to African Americans by the government due to transgressions against their ancestors? Do benefits of genetically modified organisms or foods outweigh the harms?
 
All of these questions are or have been hot-button issues in the United States over the past several years. And all have been tackled by a group of MFL MarMac students who are part of the school’s debate team.
 
 
The team is coached by Angie Killian and Scott Boylen. Killian put the school’s debate team together five years ago. And since then, the program has grown, with six teams of two students each involved this year.
