County supervisors discuss vehicle use

ELKADER — The Clayton County Board of Supervisors held a wide-ranging discussion of county-owned vehicle use during its July 2 meeting in Elkader.

The discussion stemmed from public concerns regarding county vehicles being driven by employees from home to work, with department heads, employees and members of the public invited to share their opinions on the matter.

County Engineer Raef Koopman said employees were initially allowed to use the vehicles in lieu of receiving a wage increase. He noted that some of the public concern regards stops after work hours in county-owned vehicles that, by policy, employees are allowed to make, and that policy could be changed if necessary. Sheriff Mike Tschirgi said his employees are also allowed to make stops in the county-owned vehicles that they drive to and from work.
