Conference champions! - Bulldogs clinch first volleyball title in school history

LANSING — The sweet sound of Queen’s classic hit “We are the Champions” could be heard from the MFL MarMac volleyball locker room in Lansing Friday night, minutes after the Bulldogs did something that no other team had done in school history — clinch a conference championship.

The Bulldogs (14-11 overall, 7-1 UIC) swept Kee High 25-8, 25-17, 25-20, capping a run that seemed improbable as recently as two weeks before, when the team had a losing record overall and was just 2-1 in league matches.

“I think we were sick of losing,” senior Brinan Berger said. “We just wanted to win and get it done.”

The schedule set up so that the girls could make a big move in the conference race in a hurry, with five of their eight league matches in an 11-day span. The run began with a sweep against Postville followed by a sweep the next night at North Fayette Valley, which had not lost a conference match to that point.
