City hopes renovated campground brings more visitors to Monona

MONONA — Monona’s Gateway Park Campground looks little like it did a year ago at this time. With a new restroom facility, renovated shelter and improved campsites, the facility is only waiting for those looking to spend the night. And they are coming.

The improved campground was one of the goals the Mayor Lynn “Marty” Martinson had for the funds generated by the sale of the Garden View senior living facility late last year.

“The whole thing was the (Butterfly) trail,” Martinson said. “Now that we have the trail completed the community was wanting restrooms out here and this campground just compliments that.

“Now you can come and stay, the kids can go to the pool, the parents are right here – it just compliments each other,” he said. “It’s another amenity to the city.”
