Bulldogs win regional opener, fall in semifinals

The MFL MarMac High School volleyball team saw its season come to an end Thursday with a three-set loss to 13th-ranked Hudson in a Class 2A, Region 6 semifinal. The loss came after the Bulldogs avenged a loss from earlier in the season with a four-set victory over South Winneshiek in a Regional quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs wrap up their season with a 16-10 record while Hudson (31-6) will face two-time defending Class 2A state champion Dike-New Hartford in the regional final.

Set scores against Hudson were 25-9, 25-13, 25-19while set scores against South Winn. were 24-26, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-19.

MFL MarMac 3, South Winneshiek 1

The Bulldogs had a surprise for a South Winneshiek team that had swept the Bulldogs earlier in the month – a new setter. Freshman Riley Moreland, who had played middle hitter in every regular-season varsity match and had set at times for the junior varsity team, stepped into the Bulldog lineup and provided a new look.

“We decided to switch some things up,” Bulldog coach Kelly Winter said. “Riley handled it very well as a freshman.

“We saw a need for someone in that front row that can dump the ball,” the coach said. “Megan (Lang) has done a wonderful job for us all year long, she led us to where we’re at now. But we needed to change some things up and I think that caught them off guard.
