Bulldogs take down Oelwein with ease

The MFL MarMac boy’s basketball team played in the first part of the class 2A, district 6 tournament on Monday, Feb. 13, 2017 at the MFL MarMac High School gym.
 
The game started out in normal fashion for the Bulldogs. They were able to outscore the Oelwein Huskies, but the score was still close and low. The first quarter ended 13-9, Bulldogs. The second quarter was a big momentum change for the Bulldogs. They doubled the Huskies points and extended the lead by 12 points. The quarter ended 16-9, with a halftime score of 29-17.
 
The second half began with high scoring from both sides. The Bulldogs barely outscored the Huskies, solidifying the lead going into the fourth quarter. The third quarter score was 19-18, Bulldogs. The final quarter began with the Huskies playing desperate. The Bulldogs gained an even larger lead and easily took the win at home. The fourth quarter ended 26-17, Bulldogs with a final score of 74-52.
 
Senior Tristen Kautman, who had 29 points, led the stellar offense. Senior Cade Kuenster had 19 points, which helped seal the victory. The team shot 66 percent overall when it came to field goals.
 
The defense was an important factor in the game, as they put a stop to any serious attacks brought on by the Huskies. The team had a total of 15 steals, with five coming from Kautman. The Bulldogs also had a combined 25 rebounds, with six coming from senior Bryar Ruff and junior Mason Hertrampf.
 
The team looked much different than when they last played Oelwein, less than a week ago. The last time they faced off, the Huskies forced the Bulldogs into overtime. Whatever problems arose was quickly fixed and this game showed the power that the Bulldogs could put out.
