Bulldogs extend UIC winning streak to five

LANSING - Tyler Kurth scored 22 points and Sam Koeller grabbed 13 rebounds Friday as MFL MarMac’s boys’ basketball team won its fifth straight Upper Iowa Conference game Friday, 64-52 at Kee High.

The Bulldogs (10-7 overall, 10-3 UIC) also downed Postville 59-44 Thursday while falling to Decorah 66-38 Saturday in non-conference play. Tuesday’s scheduled game at Central (Elkader) was postponed and will be made up Friday as a JV/Varsity boys’ doubleheader.

The difference in Friday night’s game was free throws. The Bulldogs hit their first 13 attempts from the line and went 17-of-18 on the night while Kee hit just 6-of-12 charity shots. MFL MarMac jumped ahead early against Kee and then hold off several Hawk runs in the second half. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 8-0 in the game’s first two and one-half minutes and led 15-4 five minutes into the game when Kee called a timeout. The Bulldog lead reached 14 points, 21-7, late in the first quarter before Kee ran off eight straight points to make it a six-point game.

The Bulldogs extended their lead back to double digits on back-to-back Kurth baskets and made it a 35-21 game as Sam Koeller completed a three-point play with a bucket and free throw. Kee hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 35-24 game as the teams retreated to their locker rooms.
