Bulldog Dance Team fourth at state competition

DES MOINES — MFL MarMac High School’s Bulldog Dance Team made the most of its first trip to the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Championship in seven years last week, placing fourth in its division at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The dance championships have been happening for more than 30 years, though this was the first time since 2012 that MFL MarMac has entered. Kelli Sax, a veteran dance coach who is working with the Bulldog Dance Team for the first time this year, said she had experience with dance competition in Wisconsin, and started thinking about taking her new team to State as she saw the team come together this summer.

“I didn’t set out to go to state this year because I knew it would be our first year together,” she said. I didn’t know if it would be something that they’d be interested in or if we’d be ready for that kind of level. But they just took off with learning things this summer camp and as we went toward the season they were picking up material really well, so I presented the offer to them because I thought they had a good chance and that they would do well.
