Children’s author shares stories with MFL MarMac elementary students

MONONA — Award-winning children’s author Derek Anderson braved northeast Iowa’s late-winter snowstorm last week to meet and read to students at MFL MarMac Elementary.

The author of more than 25 books, Anderson told students of how he knew he wanted to be an author and illustrator from the time he shared the first picture he remembers drawing with his principal at Roosevelt Elementary School in Ames. Two years later he wrote his first story. He’s been writing and drawing ever since.

Anderson shared spirited presentations of two of his books, “Little Quack” and “Ten Pigs: An Epic Bath Adventure” with the students before taking questions and then showing the students how he draws Little Quack, who has been at the center of eight of Anderson’s books.

Teacher Librarian Melissa Haberichter said she saw Anderson at the Iowa Reading Conference last summer.

“He was just really dynamic and fun,” she said.
